What is a lure?

Fishing LuresA lure is a man made resemblance of a bait fish. They can have multiple hooks on the bottom of them, most have 3 sets of triple hooks on them, also referred to 3 sets of treble hooks, to increase the chances of landing when a fish strikes. Lures come in many sizes, and most importantly they come in many colors, this will trigger the specific kind of fish that you are trying to catch. If you are doing some fishing in hazy or muddy waters, you will want to choose a bright colored lure, so that the fish will be tricked into thinking it's actually a live bait. When you are using a lure you want to cast out far, and then reel in at a good speed, giving the line a short tug every couple of winds, you want the lure to  look as natural to the fish as you can, increasing the chances of them biting at it. There are also lures that are made specifically for trolling. Trolling is where you have one or more rods in a rod holder, and you are driving the boat, and the line(s) are following the back of the boat. Depending on what you are fishing for will determine the speed that the boat needs to be going out. There are many types of big game saltwater fish that you can catch by trolling with lures, some of the big names are marlin, sailfish, tuna, mahi mahi, and many more. The cost of saltwater fishing lures can vary from a couple of bucks to over a hundred, so if you are fishing with an expensive lure you better make sure that you have a very strong and reliable knot that is tied to the leader line.
